Nature - Our Outdoor Classroom and Place Based Education
Nature is an essential part of Rain Lily’s curriculum and school community. Teacher Leaders regularly present lessons in the outdoor classroom; a carefully designed environment crafted from locally sourced, natural materials and featuring an inviting natural archway garden entrance, rustic tree stump seating, a serene peace area, a sheltered classroom space filled with Montessori inspired nature based lessons, and an interactive children’s garden. The children create art in this space from seashells and driftwood and other natural materials. Guided lessons incorporate both the flora and fauna of Amelia Island, as well as the rich history of the community, weaving in historical teaching on local Black, Indigenous and female leaders. Rain Lily’s school model is grounded in a belief that through strong roots, children are better positioned to explore, understand and empathize with the global community. Rain Lily Montessori is committed to the inclusion of all people. We were honored to receive the American Montessori Society’s Ursula Thrush Peace Seed Grant, a testament to our dedication to peace and social justice education.
